About this book
Claude G. Bowers gives this book the subtitle The Struggle for Democracy in America. His preface says that American history has run along lines marked out by the antagonism of Jefferson and Hamilton. The book carries a list of illustrations, an index and numbered footnotes, and it was copyrighted in 1925.
The narrative gives close local detail. One passage describes New York as a city of thirty-five thousand people, with Broadway paved only to Vesey Street, shops around Nassau and William, and Wall as the place for a promenade. Another covers Jay, then Chief Justice, and the instructions he carried, which Hamilton had prepared almost exclusively, and his sailing from New York on May 12th. A further passage quotes Gallatin writing to his father-in-law about a delay, in an account that names Bayard and Burr and a ballot taken in the House on a Monday.
