About this book
The Party Battles of the Jackson Period is an anniversary edition by Claude G. Bowers. Its preface marks the hundredth anniversary of the campaign that brought Andrew Jackson's election to the Presidency. The front matter lists illustrations, an index, footnotes and a list of books, papers and manuscripts cited and consulted.
In one passage the author describes Washington in those years: ruts in the streets, pools of muddy water on the sidewalks and cows pasturing on streets now lined with elegant homes. Another passage names the Globe as the center and soul of the Democratic organization, with the Albany Argus, Van Buren's organ, among the papers backing Jackson. The index points to John Quincy Adams, Calhoun, Van Buren and the Abolitionists, among many other names.
