About this book

Jimsy, The Christmas Kid, by Leona Dalrymple, has chapters titled The Invasion, The Biscuit Link and The Chain Grows, among others. The chapter called The Invasion begins by saying that his name was Jimsy and he took it for granted that you liked him. Jimsy arrives in the village two days before Christmas, strung to such a holiday pitch of expectation.

Jimsy says, "I'm a stray, I am. Hain't got no folks," and calls himself the Christmas kid. Jimsy says he has only one rig, and that Mom Dorgan borrowed the clothes he is wearing for him. Jimsy tells Mister Sawyer that a boy called him an old crab, a miser and a skinflint, and that he blacked the boy's eye and told him he lied. Abner Sawyer is conscious of a swelling mutiny in his throat as he sees a woman clinging to a child and crying, and Jimsy gulps, "Do-o-o-on't cry, Aunt Judith!"
