About this book
Vance Barnum wrote Joe Strong the Boy Fire-Eater, or The Most Dangerous Performance on Record. The contents list chapters titled The Vanishing Lady, A Dangerous Swing, Joe Eats Fire, The Blazing Banquet and Ham Is Missing, among others. Joe takes hold of a veil and the young magician raises the soft, black silk gauze; the audience gasps, and the chair in which Helen Morton had been seated was empty. A roar comes from the direction of the animal tent and a voice cries that a tiger is loose.
Joe faces his audience in readiness for the fire-eating act and says he does not really eat the fire but only seems to do so. Joe is guided upstairs to a squalid room and sees the old fire-eater lying on a tumbled bed, Ham Logan, in even worse condition than when he had applied to Joe for work.
