About this book
Joe Strong, the Boy Fish is subtitled Marvelous Doings in a Big Tank, and its first chapter, Something Wrong, opens on a circus parade with drums, bugles, elephants and camels. Joe Strong comes back to the dressing tent to say there is a good crowd. During the show he works on the trapeze with Sid and Tonzo, and he sees Benny Turton leap from a platform into a glass tank for the human fish act. Joe sees pain on Benny's face and tells the clown Bill Watson that Benny has a cramp. A chapter called Joe Fills In follows.
In another scene Tonzo asks Joe to entertain thirty or forty people, and Joe says he cannot afford it, though Tonzo says his salary has nearly doubled. In the dressing room he puts on the red, scaly suit he wears in the tank while Sid and Tonzo talk. Dr. Wertz, who speaks with a German accent, asks him about the water pressure on his vocal chords and ear drums.
