About this book
John Masefield's book gives A Few Personal Recollections, with Biographical Notes, on John M. Synge. Masefield says he first met John M. Synge at the room of a common friend, in an old house in Bloomsbury, on a Monday night of January, 1903. Masefield describes a dark, grave face, with a great deal in it, changing from the liveliness of conversation to a gravity of scrutiny. Masefield writes that Synge was not talking but answering, and offered nothing of his own.
Masefield says the Irish players gave a few performances at the Kingsway Theatre in late May or early June, 1907, and that he met Synge in the foyer just before the first London performance of The Playboy of the Western World. A closing section of Other Writings lists The Aran Islands, written between 1899 and 1907, and Poems and Translations, written between 1891 and 1908, among others.
