About this book

King Cole is by John Masefield, with drawings in black and white by Judith Masefield. The verse says King Cole was King before the troubles came, and that the land was happy while he held the helm. The verse tells of a circus that wandered where good King Cole most haunts the public way, coming from Reading for St. Giles's Fair through rain unceasing since Augustine's Day. The showman stands apart, a beaten man, with his mind repeating that this is the end and that he is ruined and defeated.

In an exchange between the Wife and the Showman, the Wife asks whether he ate, the Showman answers that it was bread and cheese and that he would not touch the meat, and the Wife points out that the cheese is whole, the loaf unbroken, and both are fresh. The verse names butterflies that came fluttering about the van, such as Red Admirals, Brimstones and Peacocks. Near the waggons a fire glows red on happy faces where a feast is spread, and the artists of the show sup gladly.
