Meet William Brown, the perpetually grubby eleven-year-old who has been getting into trouble since 1922. Richmal Crompton's first collection gathers twelve stories about William and his loyal gang, the Outlaws, as they blunder through one scheme after another. He runs away from home, stages a chaotic animal show, gate-crashes a wedding, and generally leaves adults exasperated while remaining entirely convinced of his own good sense. Crompton writes with a dry, knowing wit that works as well for grown-ups as for children, poking gentle fun at middle-class English respectability through the eyes of a boy who cannot see the point of any of it. William would go on to star in dozens more books.

About the author

Richmal Crompton

Richmal Crompton (1890-1969) was an English writer and classics teacher whose time in the classroom ended when she contracted polio. She turned to writing full-time and created the hugely popular Just William series, which ran to thirty-nine books and made her one of Britain's best-loved children's authors.
