About this book
Kenelm Chillingly: His Adventures and Opinions is by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The Parson tells Kenelm to hold up his head, saying he is sure Kenelm has done nothing unworthy of a gentleman. A passage says that Mrs. John Chillingly, entering the room to summon her husband to breakfast, stood astounded to see him with his coat off, and parrying the blows of Kenelm.
A speaker named Mivers tells Kenelm that Gordon is right, that a young politician must go with his party, and that a veteran journalist like himself is more independent. Kenelm says that, when the devil drives, he would have thought it better to resign a seat on the coach. A passage addressed to a reader who is in the place of mother to a sister’s child says to act as a keeper now, to prepare her mind and heart for the coming change in the relations between her and the speaker.
