About this book

An announcement of a new baby interrupts Mr. Caxton's work on Homer, setting scholarly distraction beside the everyday demands of family life. His son's first-person account turns that contrast into a source of humor and affection. Published in 1849, Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel follows Pisistratus through the influences of home and the ambitions of youth, with household relationships at the centre of its storytelling.

A later visit to Uncle Roland brings a different family temperament into view. His carefully ordered rooms contain books of chivalry, military equipment and reminders of his service, while his conversation returns to ancestral lands and plans for their future. The narrator observes these objects and habits with interest in the person behind them. Readers drawn to domestic fiction will find a family portrait built through conversation, small gestures and the distinct ways its members express care and pride.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton

Edward Bulwer-Lytton was a Member of Parliament, briefly Colonial Secretary, and for a stretch of the nineteenth century among the best-paid novelists in England, which is not how he is remembered.
