About this book
The first book opens with an initial chapter headed as showing how the novel came to be written. The initial chapter is set out as a scene in the hall of Uncle Roland's tower, in winter. Mr. Caxton says that novels have become a necessity of the age and that a novel must be written. Uncle Roland slams down the volume he had just concluded and says that how he comes to read such trash night after night is more than he could possibly explain.
A handbill signed Haverill Dashmore, Captain R. N., announces the intention of that gentleman to emancipate the borough from the unconstitutional domination of an oligarchical faction. A speaker addresses Mr. Dale and complains of a man for whom he was hissed in a market-place and shot at, with a ball lodged in his right shoulder.
