About this book

A message cut into a hazel wand links woodland secrecy with the life of a royal court. In "The Lay of the Honeysuckle," Tristan returns to Cornwall after King Mark sends him away because of his love for Queen Isoude. News of a court gathering at Tintagel gives him a chance to reach her, and a small carved object becomes a sign of recognition. This episode brings the collection's medieval love stories close to the choices and fears of particular people.

Eugene Mason's 1911 translation brings Marie de France's lays into English, alongside an introduction concerned with her writing, its sources and the evidence for her life. The volume belongs to the tradition of short French romances and legends. Readers interested in courtly relationships can follow how affection meets royal authority, while those interested in literary history can consider the introduction's account of a woman writing in the twelfth century.
