About this book
Fear fills Priam’s city after Hector’s funeral, and Penthesileia arrives at Troy with twelve warrior companions. This opening places personal grief beside the pressures of the Trojan War. Smyrnaeus Quintus tells the story in epic verse, presented here in A. S. Way’s 1913 English translation. Penthesileia’s sorrow over her sister’s accidental death gives her arrival a purpose beyond the fighting itself, while comparisons with animals, stars and divine figures shape the poem’s descriptions.
Later passages turn to Eurypylus and the struggle around the Greek ships. The speed of the battle gives way to mourning and funeral observances, with attention to the different qualities for which fallen companions are remembered. Gods and fate remain part of the language through which these losses are understood.
