About this book
Smoke and chimneys surround a small patch of green in Sibyl Bristowe's London garden poems. Tulips, irises and flourishing weeds fill one piece; artichokes, turnips and other useful crops fill its later companion. These close observations sit beside poems about war, grief and the passage of time. G. K. Chesterton's introduction presents the collection as verse prompted by personal occasions, drawing attention to the force of its shorter pieces.
A soldier counts the minutes before an advance, while a memorial poem remembers the writer's brother beside the Rufigi. Elsewhere, a reflection on poetic craft follows a writer from laboured rules towards rhythms found in wind and waves. Queen Elizabeth's dancing supplies another change of scene and tone. Readers interested in short poems can find domestic detail, historical figures and public events brought into contact with individual feeling.
