About this book

Salt, sand and wind give the flowers in H. D.'s Sea Garden their rough outlines. The opening poem values a sparse rose battered by the shore, while later verses turn to lilies, violets, heat and cliff faces. Published in 1916, the collection uses short lines and direct addresses to make natural things feel close, resistant and alive. Its landscapes carry feelings of longing, fear and admiration through sharply observed surfaces and movements.

The sea also draws human voices into its force. A boat rises and falls in "The Helmsman," and "The Shrine" places reverence beside the danger of a rocky coast. In "Garden," a speaker calls on the wind to break oppressive heat. Readers interested in concentrated lyric verse can follow how a petal, a gust or a patch of stone becomes the centre of an emotional scene.
