About this book
A moonlit garden gives two lovers a language of flowers, birds and shifting light. Madison Julius Cawein's lyrical eclogue opens in late spring, with a man waiting outside the garden before a playful exchange of trust, affection and imagined enchantments. Short scene directions introduce their alternating voices, so the poem can read like a small drama carried by songs and rhyming speeches.
Estrangement changes the mood as the man enters the woods and approaches a stream. Leaves, lilies, insects and reflected skies become part of his distress, just as the garden earlier reflected delight. Readers interested in nature poetry can follow the close observation of plants and creatures alongside the lovers' changing feelings. The prefatory note also identifies the work as a thorough revision and expansion of an earlier poem from Days and Dreams.
