About this book

Laughable Lyrics is a fourth book of nonsense poems, songs, botany, music, etc. by Edward Lear, with all the original illustrations. The contents list The Dong With A Luminous Nose, The Two Old Bachelors, The Pelican Chorus, The Pobble Who Has No Toes, The Quangle Wangle's Hat, Nonsense Botany and Nonsense Alphabets, among others. A poem about the Dong says that long years ago the Dong was happy and gay, till he fell in love with a Jumbly Girl who came to those shores one day.

The Jumblies sang a chorus daily and nightly: Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live; Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a sieve. The New Vestments tells of an old man in the Kingdom of Tess who invented a purely original dress, with a loaf of Brown Bread by way of a hat and a shirt made up of no end of dead mice. One verse says It's a fact the whole world knows, That Pobbles are happier without their toes.
