About this book

Songs of Childhood by Walter de la Mare is a collection of forty-seven poems about subjects and experiences familiar to children. The text says the poetry of Walter de la Mare has the honest candor of the border ballads and the fairy tales, with unmitigated joys beside the dangers and horrors and sorrows that every child soon knows to be part of the world.

Under the heading THE GAGE, a voice calls to Lady Jane that her hound has broken bounds again and chased a timorous deer, and a reply is addressed to Lord Aërie. Under the heading THE LAMPLIGHTER, a swift angel kindles God's tapers while a lamplighter with an ashen staff passes along the darkling streets to light our earthly lamps.
