About this book
Letters of a Dakota Divorcee is by Jane Burr and is gratefully dedicated to My Sioux Falls Friends. The author's note says the little volume will soon assume the proportions of an invaluable reference book as the Divorcee is gradually becoming extinct in South Dakota.
A letter describes the writer's attorney as thoroughly picturesque, wearing a coat in his office that his wife must have made. A letter-writer recalls asking how much the fee would be and being told, "One hundred if you furnish witnesses, two hundred if we do." One letter sends greetings for a birthday and is signed Marianne. A letter dated February 10 asks Lorna not to be cross, saying "I am in no danger" and that life has become so mysteriously perfect that the hours are dreamed away. A narrator in the book calls out "Don" to a man walking away, who turns and comes back to where they sat, kneels beside them and kisses the baby's lips, while the infant puts his arms around Donald's neck.
