About this book
Letters to Helen: Impressions of an Artist on the Western Front is by Keith Henderson. The preface says that the letters were never intended for publication, but when the pictures were brought back from France it was suggested that they should be reproduced, and a book evolved. The list of illustrations includes, among others, Crucifix Corner, Bailleul, Le Mont des Cats and Fricourt Cemetery.
The June 8 entry headed THE CHATEAU-FARM describes looking out into the courtyard and the sunlight, on geese, Muscovy ducks, pigs, and pigeons. A passage on the fighting says trench warfare no longer exists, with a few hastily dug holes and a few short lines of trench, mostly battered to pieces. A passage on no-man's-land says the ground becomes more and more like boiling porridge as you approach it, and that men have been very brave, very tender, in no-man's-land.
