About this book
Life and Writings of Maurice Maeterlinck is a book by Jethro Bithell. The preface says it is not an easy task to write the life of a man who is still living. The book says Maeterlinck was never absorbed by Ghent but was, as a young man, oppressed by some of its moods.
A quoted remark says Maeterlinck will never forgive the Jesuit fathers of the Collège de Sainte-Barbe their narrow tyranny, and that he would not begin life again if he had to pay for it by his seven years at school. The text says that towards the end of 1896 Maeterlinck settled in Paris, where his life was no less retired than it had been in Ghent. The text says The Treasure of the Humble had been dedicated to a Parisian lady, Georgette Leblanc, and that Sagesse et Destinée (Wisdom and Destiny) of 1898 is dedicated to her also. The dedication of Sagesse et Destinée says there is a higher and a more real collaboration than that of the pen.
