About this book
Tudor School-boy Life: The dialogues of Juan Luis Vives is a book by Juan Luis Vives. The title page says the dialogues are translated for the first time into English, together with an introduction by Foster Watson, M.A. The contents list for the introduction names, among others, Home and School Life, Games and Nature Study.
The text says that from 1522 onwards, till after the divorce of Catharine of Aragon, Vives appears to have spent a portion of the year in England. The text quotes a letter describing London life: I have as sleeping place a narrow den, in which there is no chair, no table. A dialogue in the text has Tyro ask what these names signify, and Spud answer that both these names are taken from the art of warfare. The text says intemperance makes us beasts, lying makes us devils, and the truth makes us demigods.
