About this book

Pride in her Irish family runs through Annie Besant's account of her early life. Her 1893 autobiography opens with her birth in London, then recalls a grandfather's quick temper and a mother's firm ideas about honour and dignity. Family memories sit beside reflections on astrology, physical circumstances and personal choice. In the preface, Besant explains her hope that describing her own struggles with belief will help others facing similar uncertainty.

Her public speaking in 1875 brings disputes over freedom of opinion into focus. Besant recounts declaring her atheism at the Liberal Social Union and beginning lectures on civil and religious liberty. When she prepares a paper on God's existence, the Dialectical Society loses access to its usual meeting room. Chapters listed in the contents also address Charles Bradlaugh, socialism and the search for spiritual peace. Readers interested in the relationship between private conviction and public debate will find a personal record of study, argument and resistance.
