About this book

Life of Harriet Beecher Stowe is compiled from her letters and journals by her son Charles Edward Stowe, as the title page of this 1890 Boston and New York volume states. A preface in the first person says that she had long wished to leave some recollections of her life and that her son compiled the book from her letters, at her suggestion.

The contents include a passage that weighs arguments for the immortality of the soul and a travel letter describing visits to Inverary, Oban and Inverness, the Caledonian Canal and Dunrobin, where a duchess comes to meet the party in a coach-and-four with liveried postilions and outriders. The index lists entries such as the anti-slavery cause, Andover, Massachusetts, the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, and her delight in the Arabian Nights.
