About this book
Lighthouses and Lightships offers a descriptive and historical account of lighthouse construction and organization, with illustrations drawn from photographs and other sources. The explanation of revolving lights describes a three- or four-sided frame with large reflectors grouped on each side and their axes parallel.
The intermittent light suddenly appears, continues steadily for a short time and is suddenly eclipsed for half a minute. The construction account describes a rough-stone jetty about 170 feet long in one haven, built to facilitate frequent embarkations and disembarkations. The account locates the harbour of La Corderie exactly opposite the Héaux. The account records granite arriving from the Ile-Grande, about ten leagues westward, and lime from the basin of the Loire.
