About this book
W. G. Aston, translator of the Nihongi and author of works on Japanese language and literature, wrote this survey of Shinto in 1905. After a chapter on sources it treats personification and the deification of men, myth, the nature-deities and man-deities of the pantheon, the priesthood, worship, morals and purity, ceremonial, magic and divination, and the decay of Shinto and modern sects.
Aston calls the old Kami cult of Japan rudimentary, with no supreme deity, yet not a primitive religion.
