About this book

The contents of Men of Invention and Industry list subjects ranging from shipbuilding and the screw propeller to the marine chronometer and silk manufacture. The account of Martin Frobisher describes a voyage in the Gabriel alone into the north-western sea after the loss of a vessel and the desertion of another. The account says that supposed gold ore brought home from an expedition proved to be only glittering sand.

The discussion of The Times records the newspaper's announcement of the capitulation of Flushing forty-eight hours before news arrived by any other channel. A quoted account of mathematical study describes responding to failure by working through quadratic equations and solving all those in Todhunter's larger Algebra.
