About this book
London City, part of The Survey of London, is by Sir Walter Besant. The preface says the volume begins the second part of the Survey and turns to London in its topographical aspect, treating it street by street. The text says that someone expelled from Winchester bought the See of London from Wulfhere, King of the Mercians, somewhere about 666.
A quoted account says John Mutas, a Picarde or Frenchman, harboured in his house many Frenchmen, and that on evil May-day, which was in the year 1517, the apprentices and others spoiled his house. The text says that when the Reformation came, the trade of the street was annihilated, and that, fortunately for the poor Paternostrers, the work of destruction was not sudden.
