About this book
The account of city gardens describes Pepys mentioning other people burying wine and goods in their gardens during the Fire when those possessions could not be sent to the country. The gardening history places Gerard’s own garden in Holborn and says that no less than some 972 varieties of plants flourished there, with a catalogue published in 1596. The gardening history describes gardeners attempting to grow newly acquired floral treasures from all parts of the world in London.
The discussion of the Heath describes inhabitants taking active steps to arouse public attention and preserve the open ground against encroaching buildings. The list of works consulted cautions that its dates do not always refer to first editions, but to the editions actually consulted.
