Charles William Heckethorn is the author of London Souvenirs. The contents list names, among others, Gambling-Clubs and High Play, Old London Coffee-Houses and The Lost Rivers of London. Walpole made Mary, the elder of the two sisters, an offer of his hand when he had succeeded to the Earldom of Orford.
Little Strawberry Hill, the residence of the Misses Berry, had before their coming to live in it been occupied by Kitty Clive, the famous actress. Of Kitty it was said that no man could be grave when she chose to be merry. One Ralph, an architect, had a Critical Review of the Buildings, Statues, and Ornaments in and about London published in 1783. Wolsey had to surrender Hampton Court to Henry VIII. much as a traveller gives up his purse and watch to the well-armed highwayman.
