About this book
To understand medieval London, Henry B. Wheatley turns to the streets people used and the rules that governed their lives. First published in 1904, this historical study centres on the period from the Norman Conquest to the Battle of Bosworth. Chapters on the walled town, the river, London Bridge and the Tower connect the city's physical shape with its daily routines. The discussion also takes in trade, education, church life and the work of civic governors and officials.
A chapter on health and sanitation brings the record down to individual working lives. William King, a surgeon at the Pesthouse, petitions for a pension after caring for people with plague; the city grants him a small annual stipend. Wheatley also examines accounts of later epidemics and their treatment. Readers interested in urban history will find a view of London built from contemporary records, with attention to the practical demands of living together in a city.
