About this book
The bibliographical note says Lord Kilgobbin appeared originally as a serial in The Cornhill Magazine, from the issue for October 1870 to the issue for March 1872, and was first published in book form in three volumes in 1872. The dedication says the work was written in breaking health and broken spirits, and that the writer hopes this effort may be the last.
A character addressing Dick says he has just had a quarrel with his father, an excellent man and an impressive preacher, who is the minister of a little parish called Aghadoe, in the North, where they give him two hundred and ten pounds per annum. Miss Betty tells Father Luke to give himself no trouble in the matter, and says that Gorman's Austrian lessons have placed him beyond his teaching. An old lady is overheard asking her neighbour if he was not the image of the Knave of Diamonds. A woman says curtly “I thought you were the other man!” as a man makes his bow.
