About this book

Lord Ormont and His Aminta, Volume 2, by George Meredith, has a contents list for Book 2 that names chapters, among others, In a Mood of Languor, Mrs. Lawrence Finchley and A Flash of the Bruised Warrior. Mrs. Nargett Pagnell, in Aminta's amber dressing-room, alludes sadly to the long month of separation and begs her niece to let her have in plain words an exact statement of the present situation. A speaker who knows Aminta as "my niece" says she saw her married at the British Embassy in Madrid.

A speaker addressing Aminta mentions a letter of hers, received in Barcelona, saying Lord Ormont was carrying her off to Granada. Lord Ormont proposed vigilance and drill, a small degree of self-sacrifice on the part of the population, and a look-out head in the War Department. A seventh letter, signed Adolphus, came by post and was read and locked up in a jewel-box. The letters had not been destroyed because they had, or seemed to her to have, the language of passion.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
