The book gathers illustrative extracts on the method of instruction of Louis Agassiz, with an introductory note by Lane Cooper, professor of the English language and literature in Cornell University. Asked what he regarded as his greatest work, Agassiz replied, 'I have taught men to observe.' The introductory note says that in the preamble to his will Agassiz described himself in three words as 'Louis Agassiz, Teacher.'
The contents list chapters on Agassiz at Neuchatel and at Harvard and on how Agassiz taught Professor Shaler and Professor Verrill, among others. The preface says its writer has been taught, and tries to teach others, after a method in essence identical with that employed by the great naturalist. The text says Schelling remarks with great justice, in his lectures on the Method of Academical Study, that in history to begin with a survey of the entire past is in the highest degree useless and injurious.
