About this book
Anna Botsford Comstock's handbook is written for teachers and parents. One lesson, headed 'Feathers as Ornament', carries a 'Teacher's Story' explaining why male birds have bright plumage while the plumage of mother birds is inconspicuous, which helps protect their nests.
Other passages ask children about a firefly: whether it is a fly or a beetle, how long its legs are, what its antennae do and what lies beneath its wing-covers. A section called 'The Ways of the Ant' opens with a verse by Oliver Herford. An experiment with salt and water in saucers asks which crystals form first and which grow largest, and another passage describes the gold flecks on a chrysalis seen through a lens.
