About this book
Ednah D. Cheney edited this book of Louisa May Alcott's life, letters and journals and dedicated it to Anna B. Pratt, the sole surviving sister of Louisa M. Alcott, at Jamaica Plain in June 1889. Its introduction calls Alcott the greatest and most popular story-teller for children of her generation. A childhood sketch in her own words recalls building houses and bridges from big dictionaries in her father's study, and a fourth birthday party where she wore a crown of flowers and handed out cakes.
Journal entries mention a sailing in the French steamer Lafayette for Brest, weeks in Brittany, and a note that O. F. G. came out in March and sold well, with a train-boy who put a copy into her lap. The letters include one signed Always your Lu and one to Mrs. Bond, sent with the first copy of Lulu's Library, second volume, in October 1887.
