About this book

This is volume 13 of The Tales of Chekhov, with stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov in Constance Garnett's English translation. The contents list begins with Love, Lights and A Story Without an End, and goes on to titles such as A Living Chattel, The Cossack, Nerves, A Work of Art, Fat and Thin and The Death of a Government Clerk.

In one passage a speaker says it is three o'clock on a soft April night and he cannot sleep, he is so happy. In another, a narrator is on a railway line still under construction on an August night, with an engineer named Ananyev, a student and a black house-dog called Azorka. A further passage follows Groholsky and Liza, and Ivan Petrovitch, who goes away for a week. Another has a thin man presenting his wife Luise and his son Nafanail to a privy councillor.
