About this book

Swan Song is by Anton Checkov, translated from the Russian, with an introduction by Marian Fell. The introduction says Anton Tchekoff was born in the old Black Sea port of Taganrog on January 17, 1860. The introduction also says that Tchekoff was impressed into the services of the large, poverty-stricken family.

The characters are Vasili Svietlovidoff, a comedian, 68 years old, and Nikita Ivanitch, a prompter, an old man, and the scene is laid on the stage of a country theatre, at night, after the play. Svietlovidoff comes out of a dressing-room with a candle in his hand and laughs, saying that it is funny, that it is a good joke, and that he fell asleep in his dressing-room. Ivanitch says that Petrushka and Yegorka are coming back and that his master has genius, and Svietlovidoff says he is not old and that all that is foolishness, nonsense.
