About this book
The Bishop and Other Stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is Volume 7 of The Tales of Chekhov, translated by Constance Garnett. The contents list names The Bishop, The Letter, Easter Eve, A Nightmare, Uprooted and The Steppe, among others.
The piece headed THE BISHOP is set at an evening service on the eve of Palm Sunday in the Old Petrovsky Convent, and names Bishop Pyotr, who had been unwell for the last three days. Sisoy rubs the bishop's chest and back with tallow, and the bishop says "I am in a fever." The bishop of the diocese, a very fat old man, is ill with rheumatism or gout and has been in bed for over a month, and Bishop Pyotr goes to see him almost every day. The piece headed THE STEPPE, The Story of a Journey, has a shabby covered chaise driving out of N., the principal town of the province of Z., early one morning in July.
