About this book
Magic and Witchcraft is headed Reading for Travellers. The text says that in the pages which follow it offers only a few remarks upon theories or modes of belief which in remote or in nearer ages have affected the creeds and the conduct of mankind. The text states that the subject, in extenso, belongs to larger volumes, and to maturer learning and meditation.
The contents list names, among others, The Legendary Lucifer, Sources of Superstition and Monkish Superstition. The text alludes to the trials of Lady Fowlis and of Hector Munro of Fowlis, for witchcraft and poisoning, in 1590. A footnote says that, like Cato the Censor, Lucifer may have taken to study late in life.
