About this book
Man and Nature; or, Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action is by George P. Marsh, with a title page dated 1867. The title page carries a quotation from H. Bushnell about how much Man has done to change the earth.
In one passage Marsh writes of remains left by peoples who left no written records, and warns that estimates of their age can go wrong: a boat pinned together with wooden pegs does not prove that iron was unknown, since Nubians build boats that way today. Another passage compares the plans of Babinet and Palissy for catching rainfall in reservoirs or filtering receptacles to feed a spring. A late note describes oil jars found at Nicolosi under an old lava stream, and the Mompiliere flow of 1669.
