About this book
The Student's Elements of Geology is by Sir Charles Lyell, author of The Principles of Geology and The Antiquity of Man. The title page is dated 1878 and says the book has more than 600 illustrations on wood. The contents begin with a preface and Chapter I, on the different classes of rocks.
In one passage Lyell compares Swiss lake dwellings of the stone and bronze ages by the animal bones found with the tools: deer, wild boar and wild ox in the older villages, and domestic ox, goat and pig in the later ones. It mentions grains of wheat and barley, bread and woven cloth, and sites at Nidau and La Tene. Another passage describes Devonian strata with shells, corals and land plants, and a fossil found in the sandstones of Gaspe. A later passage turns to the action of wind, rain, rivers and the sea.
