About this book

This is the second edition of Charles Sprague Sargent's Manual of the Trees of North America (Exclusive of Mexico). The title page names him Director of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University and author of The Silva of North America, and lists seven hundred and eighty-three illustrations from drawings by Charles Edward Faxon and Mary W. Gill. The front pages list the principal tree regions, lettered A to H.

The preface to the second edition refers to studies carried on by the agents and correspondents of the Arboretum in the sixteen years since the publication of the Manual. One entry describes a tree's size, bark and wood, then gives its distribution by mountain range and county in Oregon and California; the next entry is Pinus Sabiniana, the Digger Pine. Thuja is covered with a conspectus of the North American species, and the Slippery Elm and Red Elm appear among the elms.
