About this book
Mary Boyle, her book is by Mary Louisa Boyle and is edited by Sir Courtenay Boyle, K.C.B. The editor's introduction calls the pages sketches of his dear aunt's life, begun by her only a few years before she died. A dedication is addressed to two well-beloved cousins, Gertrude (Countess of Kenmare) and Lady Sarah Spencer.
Asberry, addressing “My lord,” says he is a clergyman of the Church of England and that he and his son have lived for a long time within a few paces of his lordship's house, in a poor cottage. The park is described as small though, in the writer's eyes, remarkable for containing a Glastonbury Thorn, and the text mentions a legend that Joseph of Arimathæa planted the staff which he held in his hand. The text records almost daily rides in the Campagna with a woman and her sister, Fanny Kemble. A chapter heading reads Summer of 1847, Florence, Villa Careggi.
