About this book

Mary Magdalen, subtitled A Chronicle, is a book by Edgar Saltus. A scene at a brand-new circus has the cry "Three to one on Scarlet!" and the eagerness, the gesticulations, shouts, and murmurs of an impatient throng. The text shows a man named Judas gazing wistfully at the woman that sat behind Herodias and murmuring "Mary".

Herodias exclaims "Iohanan!" and says "To Machærus with him!" The text says that Jesus was, to one woman it follows, not the Son of man alone but the light of this world, the usher of the next, and that she had the faith of a little child. The text describes the soldiery forming three sides of a square at Gülgolta, with three crosses lying within the square.
