About this book
The Works of Horace is a literal prose translation into English by C. Smart, revised by Theodore Alois Buckley. The contents run through four books of Odes, the Epodes, two books of Satires, two books of Epistles and a book on the Art of Poetry.
Ode I is addressed to Maecenas. In another ode a ship is told that new waves will bear it back to sea, and one headed To Paris tells how Nereus calms the winds as Paris carries Helen away by sea. One prose passage has the speaker describing his day, from lying abed until the fourth hour and taking a stroll to bathing and a temperate dinner. Another passage says pompous introductions often have purple patches tagged on, such as a description of a grove, an altar or a river.
