About this book
Masonic Monitor of the Degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason is by George Thornburgh and covers the Ceremony of Installation, Laying Corner Stones, Dedications, Masonic Burial, Etc. The contents list headings such as Order of Business, Masonic Dates, Opening Prayer and Charge, and Closing Prayer and Charge. The order of business at stated communications is a numbered list: reading the minutes, considering unfinished business, and receiving and referring petitions.
One charge may be used at closing, addressed to brethren about to quit this sacred retreat of friendship and virtue, and tells them to be diligent, prudent, temperate, discreet. In one ceremony, the G. M. asks the brethren if they remain satisfied with their choice, and they bow in token of assent. One address says that in the grave all men are equal, and that the good deeds, the lofty thoughts, the heroic sacrifices alone survive and bear fruit in the lives of those who strive to emulate them.
