About this book
Albert G. Mackey's The Principles of Masonic Law is subtitled A Treatise on the Constitutional Laws, Usages and Landmarks of Freemasonry. The title page names him Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina and carries a line from Cicero's De Legibus. It is dated New York, 1856.
Chapter I is a historical sketch of Grand Lodges. It recalls the tradition of King Solomon's authority at the building of the temple and the Gothic Constitutions, which say that in the year 287 St. Alban obtained from Carausius a charter for the Masons to hold a general council. In another passage Mackey argues that a lodge should not question a member's vote on a ballot, comparing this to the clause protecting members of Congress for any speech or debate. An index lists entries such as consecration of a lodge, deacons and definite suspension.
