Mason's Norwich General and Commercial Directory & Handbook includes the hamlets of Earlham, Eaton, Heigham, Hellesdon, Lakenham, Pockthorpe, Thorpe, Trowse, Carrow, and Bracondale. The text gives the price as Two Shillings and Sixpence to subscribers and Three Shillings to non-subscribers. The text says the immense utility of a Directory, in a city of such great importance as Norwich, can only be fairly estimated by those who, having felt the need, have had occasion to regret the want. The text says every endeavour has been made to render the Norwich Directory and Handbook as complete and perfect a work of reference as possible, without regard to expense.
The name lists give people with their trades and streets, such as Bevan, Robert, china, glass, and earthenware dealer, Magdalen-street, and Bignold, Samuel, secretary to the Norwich Union Fire and Life offices, Surrey-street. A heading in the lists reads Coffee and Eating House Keepers, followed by names such as Chainey, William, Bridewell-alley and Crown, Charles, Elm-hill. A notice says that the Daily Times is lent to read, likewise Bleak House by Charles Dickens.
