About this book
Matthew Arnold's Sohrab and Rustum and Other Poems is edited, with introduction and notes, by Justus Collins Castleman. The contents list narrative poems Sohrab and Rustum, Saint Brandan, The Forsaken Merman and Tristram and Iseult, and lyrical poems such as The Church of Brou and Requiescat. The text quotes quiet statements made in letters to his friends, among them My poems are making their way, I think, though slowly, and are perhaps never to make way very far.
The text says the sources of Arnold's culture were classical, and names Epictetus, Sophocles and Marcus Aurelius among the props of his mind. A poem in the text asks Is there no life, but there alone? Madman or slave, must man be one? A note on the line And that sweet city with her dreaming spires says Arnold's intense love for Oxford and the surrounding country appears in many of his essays and poems.
